Books from design to distribution Open Day

A massive thanks to everyone who came to the YPS Self Publishing Open Day. The YPS team thoroughly enjoyed getting to spend a whole day just talking to authors about books – a subject we love! Many thanks also to the gang of our regular authors who came to network and pass on their advice.

It was a really great day and we have had such positive feedback from everyone. It was a fabulous opportunity for those who are just starting out on the road to self publishing to talk to others who have already published books, and to find out that it’s fun and easy!

At one stage, there were nearly a hundred people milling around the YPS building and there was a real buzz about the place! Huge thanks have to go to the team of volunteers who helped prepare and serve tea and lunch – there seemed to be a never-ending supply of refreshments!

Author, Fred Normandale, waxing lyrical about books! His trilogy has sold over ten thousand copies

We hope to have the video clips from the day edited shortly and will upload them as soon as possible.

Next year at the Spring Open Day, we’ll try to be a bit more organised so that everyone can get a chance to see more of the printroom and book production process. Book Promotion and Distribution seemed to be a popular topic for discussion, and we have already had some new ideas about how to make the service even better.

Other topics that will be more extensively covered at the next Open Day will be Social networking to promote new books and a more extensive talk on Ebooks. Another recurring question was, “what is the difference between proofreading and copyediting”, so we will have a short talk by one of our regular freelancers from the Society for Editors and Proofreaders.

We would love to hear if anyone has any ideas about what they would particularly like to see included. So, make sure you fill in the feedback form to let us know. There were copies of the ISBN application form in the goodie bags, so there’s no excuse to put off publishing your book any longer! If anyone would like to come in for a cup of tea and a further chat, we would love to see you.

In 2011, we also intend to hold a separate Open Day for family and social historians that will be hosted by our sister company, Past Times Publishing Ltd. It will give us the opportunity to focus specifically on topics about writing and publishing family histories, memoirs, village histories etc.
