4th December 2014 - An informal opportunity to share promotion and marketing ideas

Promoting and marketing books can often be frustrating for small publishers. Confidence and enthusiasm can become strained when, despite all your efforts, the response is disappointing. There is however no alternative to persevering and trying to come up with new ideas and contacts to develop awareness and hopefully sales of your books. The above informal get together will hopefully help with this.

I thought it might be helpful to bring together authors and publishers to share ideas and discuss how they have promoted their books. At this event, we will have the opportunity to meet one another, pool ideas and talk about what worked, what did not and what might be done in the future, including where we might be able to help one another.

I have booked a room at the Black Swan, Peasholme Green, York on 4th December 2014, so we can get together over an extended lunch and stay into the evening, if you are interested. The Black Swan is a lovely old pub near to the centre of York with an upstairs room, which would be ideal for us and which I have booked from 11am. Please do feel free to arrive later if you cannot be there for the start. The cost of the day would be £10 just to cover the costs of room hire and lunch.

Thursday is late night shopping in York, so you could also do some Christmas shopping in the afternoon/evening. Alternatively, The Black Swan Folk Club is held at the pub in the evening and if you wanted to make a full day of it, you could stay and enjoy this. I have attached their programme and as you will see Martin Carthy is performing on December 4.

I am inviting a number of local authors, whose publications range from children™s books to academic texts. Some authors published their books some time ago, some are recently published and others are still to be published. Numbers will be limited to 25 as I feel that the sharing of ideas and discussion would not work so well with more people. So booking will be on a first come first served basis. However if the day proves to be useful for those attending, it may be something we will repeat.

I should be very grateful if you could please:

1. Let me know if you would like to attend on 4th December (I will assume you are staying for lunch unless you let me know otherwise). As numbers are limited, it would be helpful if you could do this as soon as possible. Please do not worry about paying in advance, you can do that on the day, but it would be helpful to know numbers beforehand so we can finalise arrangements
2. Let me know any suggestions you have for items or ideas you would like to discuss. I can then include them on the agenda and try to bring in people who may be able to give help and advice.

I very much hope to see you on 4th December.

Duncan

PS If you plan to attend I would suggest you come by train or use one the York Park and ride sites. It will be Christmas shopping time and car parking near the City centre will be at a premium and expensive.
